Actions against russia's environmental crimes in Ukraine will be held on all continents before Earth Day

On the occasion of International Earth Day, as part of the EcoUnity For Ukraine campaign, Ukrainian communities from overseas and foreigners from different parts of the world will unite to launch a global campaign #StopEcocideUkraine. On April 21-23, people from all six continents will form a living chain of unity to draw attention to the environmental crimes committed by russia during its war against Ukraine.

According to information of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, since the beginning of the full-scale war, more than 2,340 facts of damage to the environment by the russians have been recorded. 495,000 hectares of Ukrainian forests are under occupation; 2.4 million hectares are currently de-occupied and need renewal. Due to the war, 20% of nature conservation areas were affected. More than 23,000 tons of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere due to fires caused by enemy shelling. 600 species of animals and 750 species of plants and mushrooms were affected by the hostilities and 120 dolphins died in the Ukrainian part of the Black Sea.

The all-Ukrainian humanist movement UAnimals is the initiator of the EcoUnity For Ukraine action. The #StopEcocideUkraine campaign is coordinated by the following partners: public organization Communities Army of Ukraine (CAU) and KLYCH community. Three organizations have joined forces to try to involve the whole world in the fight against russia’s environmental terrorism against Ukraine. Ukrainian artist Andrii Yermolenko, who prepared thematic posters, also joined the campaign.

On the occasion of International Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22, people from all over the world will come together in a living chain of unity. The action will cover all six continents of the planet: Eurasia, North and South America, Africa, Australia and Antarctica.

“Environmental crimes, which the russians are committing right now on the territory of Ukraine, constitute a global problem, the damage of which can be felt by future generations all over the world. On Earth Day, residents of London and Paris, Los Angeles and Yokkaichi, Sydney and Nairobi, even Ukrainian polar explorers from the Academician Vernadsky station in Antarctica, will join hands to protest the terrorist country that destroys all living things in its path. The EcoUnity For Ukraine action is also a call from the whole world to international institutions that should hold russians accountable for environmental crimes against humanity and the environment,” says Oleksandr Todorchuk, founder of the UAnimals humanist movement.

CAU representatives note: “Due to russian aggression, today we are losing our natural resources – forests, steppes, seas, as well as the animals and plants that live there. russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine leads to climate change, and the damage to the environment is already measured in a trillion UAHs. Our nature will feel the consequences of this war for decades to come. We call on the world to immediately condemn the kremlin’s environmental crimes and stop racist ecocide!”
