Before the full-scale war, he lived in Kyiv, working as a driver\u2014first as an employee and later as an entrepreneur. His family dog, Aiza, stayed behind in the rear. While on the front lines, he found himself caring for a cat, who soon became a social media sensation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vitaliy adopted the call sign “Joker,” after the DC Comics villain, who had a companion named Harley Quinn. Fittingly, Joker’s real-life black kitten is named Harley.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time of our conversation, Vitaliy\u2019s unit had been holding the same frontline position for five months, with Harley living there for four of those months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joker mentions that Harley “spiced things up” on TikTok, where he now has over 125,000 followers who offer tips on cat care and even send food for her. Our call connects. Joker\u2019s camera shows us his dugout.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u2014 Is the cat with you now?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 Yes, she\u2019s having lunch over there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 I\u2019ve rewatched that video of you holding her as a kitten about 15 times\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 Yeah, there were some heavy shellings back then. I found her terrified and brought her into the dugout. I talked to her, and she listened so intently\u2014it was unbelievable. Even after the shelling ended, she didn\u2019t leave the dugout for another hour.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 How did she find you?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 When we first arrived at this position, there was a pregnant cat here. One of our unit members is a vet, so he helped deliver the kittens. Once they grew up and started running around, I took a liking to a little black one. That\u2019s how I got her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joked had his Harley, so I named her the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harley has lived with us in the dugout all her life. The other kittens run around outside, and she used to run off with them, too, but now she\u2019s become quite the house cat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I feed her, and she eats with the other cats while we leave for work. When we return, the other four cats scurry off, but Harley sits there like she owns the place, totally unbothered.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 How did you manage to tame her when the other cats stayed feral?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 Harley\u2019s a bit of a disaster, to be honest. If there\u2019s wire anywhere, she\u2019ll find a way to get tangled in it. I\u2019ve had to rescue her countless times.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once, I\u2019d just returned from my post and was resting when a comrade burst in, shouting, \u201cGrab a knife and come with me!\u201d<\/em> I said, \u201cWhy a knife? I\u2019ve got a rifle.\u201d<\/em> He insisted, \u201cNo, grab a knife!\u201d<\/em> I said, \u201cLet\u2019s do the rifle! Are we going into hand-to-hand combat or what?\u201d<\/em> He said, \u201cYour silly little thing hanged herself, come quick!\u201d<\/em> I ran after him, and sure enough, Harley was hanging on the net. She was above the dugout, fell down, and was caught by her neck. I cut her free, she was trembling all over. I took her into my arms, and she calmed down.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know exactly how I managed to tame her. Maybe she lets herself be touched because I kept finding her and showing her love.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u2014 Oh, it\u2019s incredible. Every morning, there\u2019s a whole ritual. When I get ready for work, Harley comes over and starts meowing. She won\u2019t stop until I pet her and let her rub against my face, like giving her a kiss of sorts. She just can\u2019t let me gear up and go to work in peace. She demands attention before she\u2019ll let me go, like, \u201cFine, you can go, but not for long.\u201d She also goes to the other guys for a pet, but when I lie down to rest, she comes to my bed only.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\u2014 <\/span>What\u2019s a typical day like with her?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 Some days, there\u2019s a ton of work and others, you just get up and monitor the perimeter of your zone of responsibility. There are firefights, fending off attacks. During those times, I don\u2019t lock her away because if I do, she gets even more anxious.<\/span><\/p>\n

She mostly stays in or around the dugout. Meanwhile, we do our job a little away. Once, I was on my post, and she came to visit. I was shocked. I petted her, but then I took her back because we don\u2019t need that\u2014she could give away our position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Orlans [Russian drones] can see everything very well with their cameras. If they see dogs or a bunch of cats, they know there are people nearby. We don\u2019t need to let them know it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u2014 Does Harley have a favorite spot?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 When I\u2019m lying on the bed, her favorite spot is on my chest, just near my shoulder. She lies down there and goes to sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 How does she react to the shelling?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 She was scared as a kitten, but now, not so much. The only time she gets fussy is when she sees me putting on my armor and grabbing my weapon. She knows I\u2019m leaving, and she shows her displeasure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Does she affect your mood?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 Definitely! When I used to be looking for her when she was a kitten, I was beside myself with joy when I found this little ball of happiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During shelling, it was the other way, I\u2019d worry that something could hit her…<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 Can she cheer up others?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 Without her, it would be duller. We reminisce with the guys about how we were scrambling under fire to find Harley.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I couldn\u2019t find her for a week, it really got me down. But then I\u2019d see her mom, and I\u2019d think, \u201cOkay, they must be nearby.\u201d<\/em> That cheered me up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, we\u2019ll be sitting together with the guys, and Harley will come over, bothering everyone, meowing. Once someone acknowledges her and talks to her, she\u2019s happy. She\u2019ll either curl up somewhere or sit and listen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2014 In the videos, you talk to her so sweetly. Don\u2019t your comrades tease you about it?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2014 At first, they joked, \u201cDid you replace your wife\u2019s attention with that of a cat?\u201d<\/em> They even called me the \u201ccat dad.\u201d Think what you will, let it be so. But frankly speaking, you can\u2019t endure war without humor.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text]\n
