On December 21, before Christmas, UAnimals in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine set up an installation called the Unfestive Tree at the Ukrainian Embassy in Portugal. The burnt Christmas tree is a symbol of environmental devastation caused by Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine.
Since 2014, the Russian war has claimed human and animal lives, destroyed plants and entire ecosystems. The destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station is the most large-scale ecocidal act in the past 70 years. The mining around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant poses a new threat of a terrorist act. Thirty thousand square kilometers of forests are under occupation, leading to fires and chemical pollution in these areas.
Ecosystems do not have political borders. Therefore, Russia commits ecocide not only against Ukraine’s environment but also against the entire planet. The aggressor state must be held accountable for its crimes against humanity and the environment. This is the goal of the UAnimals’ project #StopEcocideUkraine.
We encourage you to join the fight against Russia’s terrorist actions!
