UAnimals Volunteer Community Fed Bats in Kharkiv

Volunteers from UAnimals Kharkiv assisted the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center in feeding bats. From January 20 to February 10, a group of 12 people—including high school students from a local lyceum—helped nourish the animals with worms.

The bats were fed mealworm and superworm larvae but not by hand—tweezers were used to prevent bites, as bats have sharp teeth!

More than 1,000 bats spend the winter at the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center. These include bats that woke up midwinter, suffered injuries, or were found in homes. Those that have a healthy weight for their species and season are placed in a refrigerator for hibernation. Others that are underweight are fed until they reach a suitable mass for safe wintering.

Ukraine is home to 27 species of bats. Three of them—the serotine bat, the Kuhl’s pipistrelle, and the grey long-eared bat—are permanent city dwellers. In winter, other species such as the noctule bat, parti-colored bat, and brown long-eared bat migrate to urban areas.
