Yuliia Ovchynnykova to Become a Member of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe on Environmental Protection through Criminal Law

Yuliia Ovchynnykova, Ukrainian MP and co-chair of the inter-factional association Humane Country (initiated by UAnimals), has been elected to the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe on environmental protection through criminal law.

The Council of Europe’s environmental protection experts develop mechanisms to hold accountable those who commit crimes against the environment. In doing so, they ensure the protection of people’s rights to a safe environment.

Together with other committee members, Yuliia Ovchynnykova will work on developing a new Convention on environmental protection through criminal law. This document will lay the foundations for a pan-European environmental criminal law.

“At the second meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe on environmental protection through criminal law, a draft of the mentioned Convention was presented, which includes provisions on ecocide, among other things. The new Council of Europe Convention will take into account the challenges facing humanity,” said Yuliia.

Every person has the right to a clean and safe environment. Let’s fight for it together!
