Berezhany District Prosecutor’s Office has submitted an indictment to court regarding three individuals who abused wild boars in a field near Zboriv at the beginning of December. The offenders face up to 8 years in prison.
A video showing the abuse of the animals was published by social media user Inna Melnychuk. Following the release of the footage, UAnimals filed a complaint with the Main Directorate of the National Police in Ternopil Oblast. The cross-party parliamentary group Humane Country also reported the incident to the police.
The three men captured on video will be tried under Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for cruelty to animals, which led to the animals’ deaths.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, a worker from the agricultural company Continental Farmers Ukraine was harvesting corn in the field, assisted by two drivers transporting the crops.
“A wild boar was caught in the harvester. The animal was unable to move properly due to severe leg injuries. Taking advantage of the boar’s helpless state, the accused inflicted additional injuries with a metal wrench and a knife,” the Prosecutor General’s Office wrote on its Facebook page.
The men voluntarily compensated over 300,000 UAH for environmental damages. They still face up to 8 years in prison.
