On May 14, a russian shelling strike damaged the Kit Behemot animal shelter in Kherson. The building was destroyed, some animals were killed, and others were injured. UAnimals will cover the costs of their treatment.
The attack took place at 3:20 p.m., according to the shelter’s owner, Oksana Petrusenko.
“When I arrived at the site, the scene was horrific. Some cats had scattered, others were trapped under the rubble. We managed to rescue three injured cats and a dog, and we are still searching for the rest,” she wrote on the shelter’s Instagram page. It is not yet known exactly how many animals were killed or injured.
At first, the animals rescued from under the debris were taken to a clinic in Kherson. However, their condition was too serious, and they had to be transferred to another facility. They were moved to the Eksvet Veterinary Hospital in Odesa.
Currently, the dog and three cats are being treated there. UAnimals will cover the full cost of treatment and any additional care the animals need.
“I can’t put into words all the emotions I’ve had to endure—and continue to feel,” Oksana Petrusenko writes. “First of all, I want to thank everyone who responded to the call for help. Facing this alone is terrifying.”
Local organizations and individual volunteers have also stepped in to assist.
