The desman lives in water, feasts on mollusks, and hides from human eyes. This animal is so cautious that even researchers consider it a fortune to encounter it in the wild. The desman is the oldest representative of European fauna: it has lived on Earth for at least 5 million years and appeared before humans.
In Ukraine, the desman is under threat of extinction. Climate change, plowing of meadows, and wastewater in rivers all pose a danger to the animal. And in 2022, a new challenge arose for it — military actions began in the desman’s habitat.
