“An example of resilience and love for life”: the donkey rescued from near Bakhmut walks again thanks to prosthesis

The wounded donkey, jointly rescued by the military, veterinarians, and animal welfare advocates, was provided with a prosthetic limb from abroad. She quickly got used to it and is already running!

In March, the military rescued the donkey from Siversk, which is near Bakhmut. During the evacuation, her calf was killed in shelling, so the soldiers named the animal Mamulya (Mom).

Mamulya herself also suffered from the war—a shell fragment damaged her front limb. Therefore, veterinarians had to perform surgeries to amputate the affected part of the limb, remove shell fragments, and install the Ilizarov apparatus. UAnimals helped fund the second surgery, purchase the medications and food.

“This is an incredibly smart and affectionate girl. When her bandage unraveled in the pasture, she would return to the farm herself and bring back the bandages. That’s how we made over 400 bandages for her. She is an example of resilience and love for life!” commented Eugenia Molchanova, head of Zelenyi Hai rehabilitation center, where Mamulya resides.

Unfortunately, Mamulya had to have the Ilizarov apparatus removed due to her discomfort. Therefore, the staff at Zelenyi Hai arranged for the creation of a prosthetic limb. An Australian veterinarian Chloe Buiting crafted it according to specific measurements, comissioned by the American company Orthopets. The prosthetic is similar to a boot: colorful on the outside and soft on the inside for Mamulya’s comfort. With it, the donkey will be able to walk even on slippery surfaces because the prosthetic has a special adaptation for this purpose.

Mamulya’s caretakers from Zelenyi Hai are thankful to everyone who has contributed to her survival and free movement. Compassion saves lives, so join our fundraisings for animals’ treatment.
