Volunteers from UAnimals cleaned up nearly 60 cubic meters of trash from 5 nature parks in Ukraine

Around 300 people across 5 regions gathered on a Saturday morning for UAnimals CleanUp Day.

Volunteers picked up trash from coastal areas in local national nature parks: “Holosiivskyi” in Kyiv, “Khortytsia” in Zaporizhzhia, “Tsuman Forest” in Volyn, “Podilski Tovtry” in Khmelnytskyi, and “Lower Dniester” in Odesa. Overall, almost 60 cubic meters of trash were removed from natural areas. This amount could fill, for example, two medium-sized trucks or a spacious living room. All this waste weighs 15 tons, which is as much as a city bus.

Kyiv traditionally attracts the most people: a hundred people volunteered to clean the Holosiivskyi Nature Park. They collected 10 cubic meters of various trash.

Kyiv

The record for the most trash collected went to Khortytsia, where volunteers gathered as much as 30 cubic meters of garbage. Yhey even found a piece of a russian missile.

Khortytsia, Zaporizhzhia region

In Tsuman Forest, they collected 8 cubic meters of waste, in the Lower Dniester park – 7, and another 4 in the Podilski Tovtry.

The most common “catch” in the trash bags was plastic. For example, in Tsuman Forest, visitors left piles of plastic waste on the banks of the Putilivka River near the village of Mochulky, where volunteers were cleaning up.

Volyn region

In Odesa, volunteers cleaned not only the coastal zone of the Dniester but also the roadsides. The Odessa-Reni highway runs through the Lower Dniester park, so volunteers had to collect both the trash left by drivers and that brought into the floodplain by the flood. At least 7 cubic meters less of various debris will lie in the floodplain and it definitely will not end up in the Dniester estuary or the Black Sea.

The trash will be taken to sorting stations and recycling plants.
