UAnimals, AZOU, and over 10 other organizations are advocating for the ban on the use of animals in circuses and interactive zoos

Society should strive towards a more compassionate treatment of animals and put an end to exploitation for the sake of entertainment.

Zoologists have appealed to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, urging him to support the law No. 5409. It was developed back in April 2021 and registered by the inter-factional association “Humanna Kraina” Together with other animal rights activists, UAnimals actively participated in its development.

Currently, this law is registered for consideration during the current session of the Verkhovna Rada.

UAnimals believes that animal circuses are prisons and forms of torture. The demand for such entertainment perpetuates the existence of this cruel business.

UAnimals has been fighting for the ban on animal circuses for many years. They have already achieved a ban on traveling circuses in Kyiv and several other cities. However, state-owned circuses still exist and continue to be funded from the state budget.

The law No. 5409 proposes amendments to the laws of Ukraine “On the Protection of Animals from Cruelty” and “On Culture”.

The law aims to establish clear definitions for terms such as “circus,” “interactive zoo,” “wildlife rehabilitation centers,” “circus,” and “spectacle event.”

The law prohibits:

– the use of animals in circuses, shows, and interactive zoos;
– cruel training methods such as inflicting physical harm, intimidation, declawing, defanging, etc.;
– forcing animals to perform actions that cause them harm, using methods such as electric shocks, fire, sharp objects, starvation, or narcotics.

The law was developed with the participation of the Inter-Factional Deputy Association “Humanna Kraina”,
the All-Ukrainian Union of Public Organizations “Association of Animal Welfare Organizations of Ukraine”, the humanitarian movement UAnimals, the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center, and the public organizations “One Planet”, “Open Cages”, and “4 Paws”.

The adoption of this law does not require additional financial expenses from the state budget of Ukraine or local budgets.

Animals that were used for shows will be taken in by rehabilitation centers and animal shelters.
