UAnimals, in collaboration with the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU), conducted a rescue operation

On December 13, the UAnimals team, along with SESU rescuers, evacuated 27 cats, 6 dogs, 2 chickens, and a duck from Vyshnyaky Island in Poltava region. The public organization Kitty’s Home “Wet Nose also assisted in catching the animals on the island.

Previously, a woman lived on the island, taking care of over 50 domestic and farm animals. She passed away in early December, leaving the animals unattended, as Liudmyla Khomenko, head of UAnimals reached out to the SES in the Poltava region, and they provided a boat and directed rescuers. UAnimals supplied cages, and carriers, and organized the transportation of the animals to Poltava.

“When we arrived, the animals were hungry, and they immediately started eating what we brought. Only one dog came to us willingly; the others were running away. Cats were hiding, and we had to search and lure them out. Some aggressive dogs, which we couldn’t catch, entered the house. We had to tranquilize them to evacuate,” said Daniil Koval, a member of the UAnimals evacuation team.

Rescuers went twice to the island on a boat, and the entire operation lasted up to 6 hours.

In Poltava, the evacuated animals were handed over to a veterinary clinic for sterilization and castration. Afterward, the organization Kitty’s Home Wet Noses will place the animals in local shelters.

However, some cats on Vyshnyaky Island were frightened by rescuers and escaped. Volunteers from Poltava will return to capture them with a special catcher.
