💙 As part of the Photo Day in Shelters initiative, 19 volunteers participated, photographing animals in 10 shelters. Beautiful professional photos of cats and dogs will help them find new families more quickly.
💙 As many as 42 volunteers joined the task of making handmade toys for animals in 9 shelters, and the shelters received 320 toys.
💙 Launched the Advent Calendar campaign in the community’s chatbot. Every Sunday in December, volunteers were tasked with performing a good deed — feeding stray animals, cleaning up litter near their homes, and more. A total of 338 people participated in the initiative.
💙 As part of the fundraiser for warm houses for stray animals in frontline areas, we sent 7 houses to Liubotyn and 10 to Mykolaiv. Volunteers in these cities will set up the houses and ensure they are clean and comfortable for the animals.
💙 Organized the Secret Santa for Animals in Eight Shelters initiative. Volunteers enthusiastically joined the campaign, sending over 350 packages with gifts to shelters. We are aware that not everyone who wanted to participate could do so, but we encourage you not to be discouraged and to join next year’s event!
💙 Volunteers distributed 950 kilograms of pet food and 553 doses of treatments for animals in the Mykolaiv, Kherson, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions.
💙 Volunteers also contributed by completing online tasks, sharing information about fundraisers, and opening auxiliary collection accounts. This powerful support has helped us close multiple fundraisers!
In December, we also continued our work to protect animal rights:
💫 The head of the Strategic Initiatives Department, Olha Chevhaniuk, represented UAnimals and Ukraine at the international Animal Politics Conference in the Netherlands. The event gathered politicians and public figures from 30 countries to discuss environmental crimes, animal protection, and support for Ukraine during the war.
🐶 UAnimals’ legal team processed 38 messages via the chatbot and provided consultations to 36 people. Most inquiries came from Kyiv and Odesa. Most were regarding administrative violations related to animal abuse.
The legal team filed 5 reports of administrative and criminal offenses with the police:
🐾 Regarding the cruel treatment of a pregnant wild boar in the fields of Zbarazh, Ternopil region. Although the case was initially classified as poaching, we filed a motion to reclassify the criminal proceedings under animal cruelty laws. We also submitted a deputy’s inquiry.
This is the case where harvesters in Zbarazh tied a pregnant sow to a tractor and dragged her across the field. Her unborn piglets fell out as she was dragged. When untied, the pig tried to escape on severed legs. The animal did not survive. Activist Inna Melnychuk wrote about the incident on Facebook, and we immediately responded due to constantly monitoring the relevant tags.
One individual involved in the offense has been served a notice of suspicion, and the pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
🐾 Regarding the cruel treatment of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the village of Harbuzivka, Mykolaiv region. We received numerous messages on social media stating that the dog’s owner beat the dog with a metal rod. Police confirmed that a pre-trial investigation into animal cruelty is underway.
🐾 Regarding the cruel treatment of a dog in Kyiv. We filed a criminal complaint regarding an unidentified man abusing a dog. A pre-trial investigation was launched, and the man was served a notice of suspicion for animal cruelty. The investigation is ongoing. The dog was seized and transferred to a shelter.
🐾 Regarding the cruel treatment of a Toy Terrier. A video surfaced on social media showing a man abusing a dog in the presence of a child. Fortunately, the dog was seized, and law enforcement initiated a pre-trial investigation for animal cruelty. The dog’s health condition will be assessed, and further steps will be taken to determine the legal classification of the case, as the crime occurred in the presence of a minor.
🐾 Regarding the abuse of horses in the center of Korostyshiv, Zhytomyr region. Unidentified individuals were found exploiting horses to transport people, subjecting the animals to excessive workloads.
🐾 Filed a formal complaint regarding the killing of a leopard at the Odesa Zoo.
At the Odesa Zoo, a leopard injured an employee who was inside the animal’s enclosure. Subsequently, the animal was killed.
Our legal team also submitted appeals to the State Labor Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, and the State Environmental Inspectorate.
We received a response from the State Labor Service stating that the Odesa Zoo had established a commission to investigate the accident.
We received a response from the State Environmental Inspectorate indicating that materials were forwarded to the Ministry of Environmental Protection to conduct an unscheduled state inspection.
We have also learned that a pre-trial investigation has been launched into violations of safety regulations during hazardous work.
Additionally, the legal team received responses to previously submitted inquiries
🐾 UAnimals received information about a possible official permit for hunting in Odesa region starting in November. The report indicated that poachers might be able to shoot animals near populated areas during martial law.
The legal team submitted an appeal to the Odesa District State Administration requesting an order to prohibit hunting in Odesa region until the termination or cancellation of martial law in Ukraine, except for regulating the population of certain game species in compliance with current legislation.
A response was received from the Odesa District State Administration stating that the decision to prohibit hunting in Odesa region during martial law does not fall within its jurisdiction or authority.
Currently, the legal team is preparing an appeal to the Odesa Regional State Administration.
🐾 Previously, the legal team filed a complaint regarding animal cruelty near the Dyvotsvit school-kindergarten in Kyiv, where two boys were abusing a dog.
A response was received from law enforcement agencies stating that an administrative offence procedure had been initiated against the legal guardians of the offenders for failing to fulfill their parental responsibilities.
