One strong explosion can break dozens of windows in a shelter. Glass shatters inside with bits of glass injuring both animals and people. At the same time, when the lights go out during the shellings, the shelters have to turn on generators and heaters, which sometimes may cause malfunction and fire.

But the animals themselves suffer the most. They are extremely sensitive to sounds: explosions cause severe stress and panic. Some animals may injure themselves or others, many experience loss of appetite and health deterioration. In some cases, animals may even die.

We want to reduce these risks and make four shelters safer for both animals and workers. To achieve that we’ve launched a fundraiser for 143,686 UAH. With these funds, we’ll purchase armored window film, animal tranquilizers, fire stands, and fire extinguishers. These measures are essential to keep the animals calmer and ensure the shelters can continue their work.

The following shelters will receive this assistance:
– “GANDI” (Kyiv) — home to 104 cats and 11 dogs;
– “Phoenix” (Boryspil) — cares for 89 cats and 29 dogs;
– “Bezpritulnyy Svit” (Bila Tserkva) — provides shelter for 450 dogs and 437 cats;
– “Adopt Don’t Stop” (Kyiv) — cares for 43 cats and 9 dogs. In late June, after a shelling in Kyiv, the shelter’s windows were shattered by a blast wave.

Here are a few stories from the animals who call these shelters home.

Karasik the kitten was swept into a sewer during a heavy downpour. Cold and on the verge of drowning, he was rescued by volunteers. At first, he was weak and frightened, but in the warmth and safety of the shelter he slowly recovered. Today, Karasik is a healthy, playful cat, says the team at Adopt Don’t Stop.

Puppies Panda and Berry live in the same shelter. At the age of only two months these spotty sisters were saved by volunteers from the frontline town of Synelnyky in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Panda and Berry lived alongside the military until the unit relocated. Now the little ones are in more comfortable conditions and are receiving much-needed treatment.

These animals have already been through so much — evacuation, cold, and the stress of explosions. Now we need to ensure their shelters are safe. Please support this fundraiser with a donation — together, we’ll ensure their shelters are truly safe homes.
