The russians shelled the port of Chornomorsk — the sea is covered with a layer of oil

On April 26, the infrastructure of the seaport was damaged as a result of yet another attack on Chornomorsk in the Odesa region. One of the strikes destroyed a tank containing 6,000 tons of sunflower oil.

According to data from the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District, a significant portion of the product spilled directly into the water. A massive oil slick measuring approximately 400 by 200 meters formed in the port’s waters.

Any pollution on this scale is a blow to the ecosystem. While environmental inspection specialists are taking water samples and assessing the actual damage, we are once again documenting yet another crime committed by russia against nature.

Specialists have already installed booms to contain the oil spill and shut off the sewage system. However, the very fact that the Ukrainian Black Sea is once again becoming the site of an environmental disaster due to the russians is outrageous.

The oil slick blocks oxygen, destroys plankton, and kills birds and fish. The Black Sea is already suffering from the consequences of a full-scale war — the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, sunken ships, and regular shelling of port infrastructure. Each such attack is not only economic damage but also the deliberate destruction of the ecosystem.

And every such crime must be documented for international courts. The occupiers must be held accountable for every crime against humanity and nature.
