Supporters of UAnimals captured on video the cruel exploitation of horses in Korostyshiv, Zhytomyr region. Lawyers from the organization requested local police intervention and filed a complaint.
The video shows two ponies struggling to pull a cart carrying five people. They can barely move the cart, which puts harmful strain on the horses, explained equine veterinary specialist Mariya Kushpil:
“To move the cart, the horses must jerk it forward with their hind legs. This kind of sudden, forceful motion damages the joints. Ligaments (tissues connecting bones) and tendons (connecting muscles to bones) can tear.”
Additionally, excessive physical strain on animals is prohibited under Article 18 of the Law on Animal Protection Against Cruelty.
UAnimals consistently opposes the use of horses as draft animals. This summer, their advocacy helped ban horse-drawn carriages for tourists in central Lviv, and discussions are ongoing about regulating horse-related businesses in the city more broadly.
