UAnimals demands cessation of bear exploitation at Zaporizhzhia Circus

According to information from UAnimals volunteers, the Zaporizhzhia State Circus uses brown bears in its shows. UAnimals has appealed to the Circus and the Ministry of Culture to cease the exploitation of the endangered species in performances.

Activists have drawn attention to the fact that the Zaporizhzhia Circus advertises shows featuring brown bears. Additionally, audience members have provided UAnimals lawyers with video recordings from shows that depict bear tricks. According to MTM Zaporizhzhia TV channel, a 29-year-old bear named Romashka, owned by artists from Mykolaiv, participates in the performance.

The brown bear is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine as an endangered species. The law prohibits the use of endangered animals in commercial activities. They can only be kept in captivity for scientific purposes with permission from the National Commission for the Red Book of Ukraine.

This is outlined in the laws “On Wildlife” and “On the Red Book of Ukraine”. According to the Law “On the Protection of Animals from Cruelty”, owners must obtain special permits to keep any wild animals in captivity.

UAnimals lawyers have called on the Zaporizhzhia State Circus and the Ministry of Culture to provide permission documents for keeping the endangered animal in captivity. Moreover, UAnimals primarily demands the cessation of bear exploitation in circus performances.
