UAnimals launches online publication dedicated to animal welfare and environmental issues

UAnimals Media will focus on various environmental topics. The media will cover stories about shelter life, individuals who work with animals, wild animals in captivity, as well as practices and approaches to animal care. The publication will also highlight environmental conservation efforts, particularly in times of war. Additionally, UAnimals Media journalists have already conducted several investigations related to animal protection from cruelty.

“The Media will be interesting to everyone. Our readers are not necessarily hardcore animal advocates or experts in this field. These are people who are ready to embrace something new. Media is about reflection,” says the Editor Kateryna Nikishova.

The theme of animal protection is so profound that it requires much closer examination than short social media posts, says UAnimals. However, social media pages will remain an important part of communication. UAnimals will also delve into detailed studies of animal welfare issues and promote environmental conservation: “We want to engage an audience that is ready to delve deeper, to reflect on how animals are treated in society, whether there are any contradictions, or whether there are established practices that need to be changed,” says Kateryna Nikishova.

Kateryna Nikishova, the editor-in-chief is originally from Kramatorsk but currently lives in Lviv. Previously, she edited the publication of the Minor Academy of Sciences “MANmedia.” Kateryna talks about her work at UAnimals Media: “I enjoy reading quality texts and feel that the journalist has written it with heart, immersed themselves in the story. And I am the first reader of this text. I want to nurture it with the authors. When our visions align, it’s the most exciting.”

More than 15 journalists from different parts of Ukraine have already worked with UAnimals Media: from Zakarpattia, Kyiv Oblast, Lviv Oblast, Rivne Oblast, and eastern regions. They have visited shelters and animal rehabilitation centers, and explored many complex topics. For example, journalist Alyona Vyshnytska conducted an investigation into the illegal euthanasia of healthy animals. Another author, Nataliia Bushkovska, delved into the topic of animal loss: “Writing this material confirmed my belief that, firstly, the loss of a human and an animal has much in common. Secondly, I discovered what can help cope with this pain. For example, how important personal support is. Loss is pain, and writing about pain is always difficult.”

In addition to topics for reflection, the media can also entertain. From its pages, you will learn about the life of the boar Kabachok in the “Rifugio” shelter, or take a test to see how much of a movie buff animal advocate you are. Have fun!
