The Kyiv Animal Rescue Group (KARG) plans to build a special enclosure where the squirrels they have rescued will learn to survive in the wild. UAnimals is helping to raise money for this project.
The animals will be placed in the enclosure once they can feed themselves. There, they will learn to forage for food, store supplies, compete with others, and hide from threats. This is a scientific practice followed by behavioral experts for the rescue of wild animals.
The future enclosure will cover an area of 15 square meters and will be 2.5 meters high. Inside, the young squirrels will find burrow preparations, tree fragments with hollows, and natural materials so they can build nests. Caretakers will scatter or hide food in various places to teach the squirrels how to find it themselves.
The funds raised will go towards metal, metal profiles, mesh, and the internal setup of the enclosure.
The first to try out this facility will be 15 squirrels rescued by the KARG team this spring and summer. They were victims of fires and human ignorance.
When the squirrels are ready for independent life in the wild, they will be released close to the rescue site.
